First Cut Feedback

We showed the first cut feedback to our two teachers and our peers.

Mr Nickleson: 

• Speed up the pace and use fast cuts to create tension
• Don't Show the Antagonist until the end  

Miss Fair: 

• It's too long 
• Looks like an opening titles sequence

We plan in the next week or two to look upon everything that we were advice on as we completely agree with the advice given. I personally do feel like music will make a really important difference to our trailer. 

First Cut - Trailer

What Is A Block Credit

The credit block is as the bottom and is the last element of the trailer that the audience looks at because it is in a smaller font than the films title at the bottom of the screen.

The credits acknowledges the cast and crew involved in the production. This is to identify USP's to the audience, this would include production and distribution companies and famous key actors.

The official website for the film may also be on the underneath the credit block, so that the film can generate more influence from other media technologies. 

Script

Sophie and I decided that we wanted to add a scene of a news-report on the 'Masked Man'. Our reasoning for this is due to the fact that we thought there should be something in the advert where it gives the audience more insight on whats going on and why they should be creeped out without ruining whats happened to these girls. We think that a news report would be good for this as it lets you know some of the story but not all of it also for it to be broadcast like that, it must be something big. 

We asked our friend Jack Mellish to do this for us because he has quite a mature look about him compared to our other friends and he would suit the role. I think that he did live up to our expectations and has really helped us adapt our product. 

Recording With my Dad and Sister

When my dad was in France with us as well one weekend my dad, little sister and I planned on recording all the parts with him in it. This soon ended with also my little brother also coming to 'help'. We set off to a different part of the woods, where I could get clear shots of Cerys and the 'Masked Man'.

This became a harder task than I thought, this is because my little brother was either moving around or talking just as I started to record meaning starting again or my little sister was laughing when she was meant to look terrified. It also wasn't helpful that my dad does not particularity enjoy acting. However, 2 hours later we had the shots that we needed.

Recording Schedule Update (18th - 20th)

November 18th - 20th

This recording schedule got pounded to the 10th of December, this is because I did not realize that my dad was going away on holiday so it was impossible to record at his house. Although, lucky for Sophie and I, we were pretty happy with what we already had to we did not need to stress too much about being set back by a couple of weeks.

Idents

This is our company's moving ident logo. This moves up and down to form the company's name 'Flesh Films'. We will use this for the trailer to show that it is out production. 

This is our comanpy's promotion ident logo. This was created to be the same colours as our other logo, however it is a block non motion ident hat we can use for our film poster so that viewers will know that it is promoting our film. 

Recording the Obsession Wall

I recorded the obsession wall as if it was being looked over/reviewed by the 'Masked Man' as if hes looking for what to do next to capture his victim. I did this by panning across it like eyes. i used my Iphone to do this as the quality is really good and the 'Masked Man' wouldn't even have a tripod or equipment himself.

I this that this will be a keen feature in our trailer.

Difficulties Approached

Unfortunately we lost some of our recordings when we came to exporting them to edit. Whilst this is very annoying and stressful lucky I was going back to the same place in France over Christmas meaning I could rerecord a lot of it with my sister.

This means that we will have to take a slightly different turn with the trailer. we have decided that it would included many family videos to show that the whole film in not terrible from the start as many thrillers start quite happy then a twist happens. We also want to take the part of Cerys and Toby talking out of the production and replace it with a news report on the 'Masked man'. My reasoning for this is that with Cerys being so young she is not a very good actress and her lack of emotion in voice would really take away from the productions themes. Also, it would be creepy if we used sounds instead of actual voice, for example the deep heavy breathing of a man behind the looking at the crazy obsession wall. the only thing with actual dialogue would be about the "Masked Man' himself. 

A Day Recording

During my holiday in the South of France my sister, Cerys, and I took a day off of holiday activities to complete some recording. I decided to pick out a costume for Cerys' character. This was a pair of red shorts and a white vest top. My reasoning behind this that the red connotes danger, that her character will be in. However, the white shows the characters purity and innocence.

My Step mum then helped me create an effect of a black eye on my little sister using black, red and purple coloured eye-shadows. 

Cerys and I cycled around the woodland area surrounding our holiday home. We wanted to find somewhere where our risk assessment could be put into place, somewhere avoiding stinging nettles. We then went through a series of ideas that i had in my head to look as if she was being chased or attacked with the camera acting as the attacker. Doing this with a 7 year old proved to be slightly hard and took a lot longer than i expected. This meant that it was starting to get dark and the lighting and setting would look really different, so I decided to stop and we would come back the next day. To do this i had to take photos of Cerys so we could match what she looked like for the next day so the recording would match using continuity editing. 

Creating the Crazy Obsession Wall

This is our crazy obsession wall. We created this on a plain board I got from my music teacher, we then cut out newspaper clippings of missing people stories and printed out photos of both Sophie and mines younger blonde siblings so it seemed as though the 'Masked Man' has had many victims. Other information such as school dates, times and phone numbers and a lock of blonde hair are also shown to prove he is a weird stalker.

We created a credit block to add some institutional feature to our film trailer. To create this we used a feature on IMovie. We added one of these to make our production look more authentic, we made up most of the names only using our names once each so that it seemed genuine.

This was really time saving and enjoyable to record, this is because I did not need anyone else there with me, I could work independently making sure that the recording and photos were not rushed, and looked good. I also did not have to redo it 100 times as i was on my own and in complete control I knew just what I wanted.

October 21st - 23rd

Trying to do with it found quite hard, due to the type of house that my dad lives in, this is a maisonette meaning there aren't many windows that I could use to create this effect as it was too awkward to stick my hand out of the window without angling the camera to make sure that my body was not in the way. However, despite this i managed to make it seem like the person recording shouldn't be here, I hope that this easily comes across in the trailer.

Recording Equipment

I recorded all of my scenes on mine and my Step mums Iphones. My reasoning for this is that being a thriller I did not want the recording to be perfectly still when Cerys was running, i wanted there to be a slight look of reality, as if this is actually happening someone behind the camera is actually chasing her. this also meant I could physically chase Cerys so she could get her in the correct frame of mind to act out the scenes.

Also being on holiday to put a lot of equipment in my bag would take up a lot of space and risk something to break, bringing alot of equipment around the place (Beaches, woods, ice skating rinks) would be a lot of hassle. So using my Iphone was practical and also really good quality.

Film Name Logo

This is our trailers film name's logo. I created this as I think that the black background gives the logo a really dark feel to it. The wire is a symbol of something that is dangerous and can restrict someone from doing something, The hint of Red in the wire really stands out and connotes blood. The reason that I picked a dirty gold colour for the text is because it is different compared to other horror films logos, but there is still a sense of it being dirty and not a pretty thing to look at.

Final Ident

This is our final ident for the trailer, this is by far the best, although it is similar to the second one, it move in a more abstract way, the fact that the letters move as if they're mirroring each other is really cool to me.

Second Ident Draft

This is the second ident that we created. I really like this one, a lot better than the first one because the colour go really well together and the font is really different but reminds me of a thriller film straight away.  The red and black colours connote, death, blood and darkness.

This is our first ident idea for our trailer. The reason that we created this is because the red connotes death, blood and anger, linking to both the protagonists. However, the white background at the start connotes purity to symbolise the protagonist Cerys.

Chosen Plot Synopsis

After asking people to read our plot synopses and pick their favorite, we have decided to go with the last one from the previous post.

A psycho Stalker is present.
The Masked Man has evaded capture for over a decade.
Nobody alive knows what the looks like, only that this victims are all little blonde girls. unbeknownst to them, The Mallory family are going to be tested to their limits, the usually carefree family must race again time to save their youngest child fro becoming yet another victim of he masked man, that has the power to tear the Mallory's apart.

Crazy/Obsession Walls

Sophie and I recently came up with the idea that Cerys should not be the 'Masked Man's' first victim, to give the trailer an all round bigger plot, to display this in our trailer we thought we could create a 'crazy wall' to show all the other victims, when talking over this idea we also thought that all the victims should have something in common so we came up with the idea that they should all be blonde young girls, a description that Cerys fits into exactly.

Therefore we decided that we should do some research to see what the conventions are, so far we have decided that we are going to include a map in our 'Crazy wall' as well as some newspaper clippings, images of the victims, various post-it notes (possibly showing the date the other victims were taken, and string to link everything together.

Plot Synopsis Plan

After creating a mind-map for all of the conventions we found when looking into plot synopsis we decided that we wanted to make a plan before we wrote our own, to ensure that we included as many conventions as possible to that when we come to write our synopsis we do not forget anything. this will also help ensure that our synopsis is engaging to our target audience and the conventions that we found are all from successful films that have a target audience similar to our own.

Recording Schedule Updated

This weekend, I went to my dads house to record some family scenes between character Cerys, a new character Toby (this character is also blonde. However, he is not a victim as it is seen boys are less vulnerable compared to boys) and our family pets, two dogs, a fully grown Dalmatian and a Sprocker puppy.

I did find some difficulties with filming this, as Cerys and Toby were a bit awkward around the camera and their conversation was not flowing, it took some time for them to feel natural about it. Also, the puppy just wanted to run around the house, making it hard to capture her in one space. Although I did manage to get some good footage of everyone together.

This is a Recording Schedule that I plan on keeping to make sure that me and Sophie have everything we need to create our trailer and keep working on our coursework without having to stress about recording not being done.

The reason for all of the dates being odd weekends is because i tend to only see my dad every other weekend, as he lives in wales. This means that this Schedule will come in handy as it will keep my up to date and organised.

Sophie and I decided to create a survey for our trailers name. The reason for this is because we have asked people in the age gap of our target audience, 16-18 year olds have taken part in this, meaning that we know what our target audience likes out of our suggestions. From our results, our trailer will be called 'Restrict Me'.

We decided that before we were to create our own final synopsis that it would be beneficial to see what other horror genres synopses are like. This will give us an understanding of what we would need to include in our own. 

Target Audience

After researching The YouGov website and creating a Prezi on some of the information that we found, we were able to finalise on who our target audience should be. 

Sophie and I have discussed the ideas for our target audience. Our target audience will start at being aimed for older teenagers; this will be age’s 15-21 years old, who are predominately from a western culture. The reason for this is because it is more of a thriller than a horror there for it would be suitable for slightly younger people. However, it is should still intriguing and scary for older people. Also being a part of the western culture our production is most likely to reach people with similar values as us. They will be from a working class to middle class background; this is as they are likely to have the money to spend on a trip to the cinema to be thrilled even if the film hasn’t been produced by a big institution. 

We will not be targeting a particular gender. This is because from our research there really was not much of a difference between the two. We also feel that the ratio between men and female characters in our trailer is fairly even and the story line and characters do not fit any set stereotypes.

We have both agreed that if our film was to be BBFC rated then it would be a 15 classification, as it fits the grouping on their website.

Masks Mood Board

Whilst researching horror films we both decided that the idea of having a mask over the antagonists face would be really cool, this is because it can give enigma codes t our trailer. For example, "Why is he wearing a mask?", "Is something wrong with his face?", "Will he take it off?", "Who is he?" this leads to a lot of questions. I also think that masks are very creepy.

We looked at many different masks and thought of ones that we might like to use. This mood board gave us a really good variety of types we can look at buying for our own.

Sophie and I came up with some institution name ideas, how we done this is on whats-app we took it in turns to come up with a name the we like, i made sure that they all have a grim vibe to them. This is because as we are doing a Thriller/Horror it only makes sense to have a grotesque feel to every thing behind the trailer. 

We both really liked the names 'Flesh Films' and 'Silent Screams' so we decided to get each of our friendship groups to help us pick. This therefore means that we got help from some members of our target audience, so hopefully it will appeal to them.

Recording with my sister was actually easier this time around as she sort of remember what i wanted her to do and was more confident with what she was doing. We were also able to shot in the back garden by our holiday house as it was prefect with the trees behind us all clumped together to give off the idea of being enclosed in when you need to get out the most.

Filming Plans

I plan to film half of the trailers content at the site my holiday home is at on the summer, this is in the South of France. The reason for this is that the houses are all wooden and many old looking small chalets. Also, the area around is crowded with Pine trees and wooded areas, as well as being right next to a beach. This environment really gives us a lot to play around with and create something completely different to any surroundings near where we live.

I will also be there for a month with my little Sister, Dad and Step-Mum, they are who we plan to use as our characters. This will give me and Sophie a lot of time to re-record and change what we want and what we do.

I will be recording on an iPhone 6, this has great quality and settings such as effect if needed. I will also have my Step-mums cam-recorder with me, meaning i have a variety of recording equipment.

Then I will be sending the recordings and photos over to Sophie, via email and whats-app, she will then be able to put them all on to her Mac, where she will edit it.

Brief First Plot Synopsis

After thinking over all of the ideas that I had for A2 me and Sophie picked a certain theme and the story behind it.


  Theme - Restriction of speech and breath.
                 The use of hands over mouths and around throats is what I want to explore.


The idea that we are going to put forward for the trailer is of an older man who stalks and assaults his victims before he murders them. The reason for picking this idea is that it's very creepy to think that some people in the world do find themselves in these sorts of similar situations, the reality behind it should be really terrifying to many people.

Why We Have Picked Horror

Horror

Recently in cinemas many Paranormal Horror have come out, so many people around our age group are interested it them at the moment. So we have though that we should create a Thriller to be a bit different.

Creating a Thriller will also be easier than a paranormal film, due to the amount of special effects paranormal films relay on.  We lack these special effects, but with the idea of a Thriller we think that it could be really interesting. We are yet to have picked a scenario; this means that I will need to be researching the genre more in the past next couple of weeks. 

Horror Characters

Character seen in Horror film: • Antagonist - This character is in every Horror whether it be a demonic character or a real person. This is what causes the trouble in the film. This character is usually shown as more powerful than everyone else. • Victim – every film has at least one victim, some times more. In paranormal films there may be one main victim and others around who get affected by the ‘Ghost’. Often the villain would be a child, due to the idea that children are more open to paranormal activities and weaker. Or a blonde female, with the idea that she is a ‘blonde bimbo’ and can’t look after herself. • The Survivor – In many Horrors there is at least one survivor, it is often a brunette female. Or sometimes a male with something to fight for. • The Hero – A character that has the bright ideas is strong (mentally and physically) and carries the group onwards. This character is normally a nerd or someone that works in the church community. • Non Believer – There is always a character that does not believe that any things happening, they’re often a jock or a good looking and thinks that they’re superior. This character often is the first to die.

Reasons For Picking Horror

Me and my partner Sophie have decided to pick the genre of Horror for our film trailer. Our reasoning for this being that we want it to be exciting, we were thinking of doing a Rom-com. However, we released that it would be really had to convey because we do not have the same sense of humor as everyone else. With Horror we think that we could really mess around with it and create something creepy as we often watch Horror films ourselves we know what people look for in one. i think that it will be interesting working with Horror to see how i have improved from AS.

Why I Created a Genre Mood Board

I decided to create a mood board as I am sort of struggling to pick a genre to work on. I looking into Comedy, romance, Horror and Action films that had been released to gather some ideas. This helped me as I got an understanding of what types of features I would need to use on my film poster and in my trailer. Also, this will help me decide what genre would be best for me to work on. I know now that I will no pick Action, this is because it would be very difficult to portray, as there is a lack of props available to me for this genres codes and conventions. Furthermore, Comedy can be hard as well as the viewers will most likely not have the same humour as me and then it would not be very funny to others.

I do not think that Romance would be very difficult to do and I think that I would be able to do it. However, personally I would like to work with something that I could be more abstract with.

Horror genre is mostly shown in low-key lighting to scare the audience, vulnerability if presented a lot. Both film posters and trailers use the colour black or red as it connotes evilness and loneliness. I think that this might be the best genre for me to work with because it would fit my dark mind and my ability to create dark thoughts, I could really play around with this genre, as long as it is done right.

In the film industry there is a mass range of different types of genres. This all depends on the common convection. Genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. The importance of choosing the right genre is to create familiarity among audiences, so that they know what type of film they like to watch and what to expect from a certain film genre. The audience are the main impact on genre, in terms of how they are created and distributed in order to make them appealing upon the films release.
